A team of 18 students and 2 professors of the masters program at TU Delft arrived in Dhaka for a week-long workshop from 24th to 29th April, focusing on housing problems and solutions relevant to Dhaka. The group divided themselves into 9 groups, with 2 members in each, and focused on several sites in Tejgaon Industrial Area. These students were assisted by members of the Design and Research Program of Bengal Institute. The studio schedule also included a lecture on housing situation of Dhaka by Professor Kazi Ashraf and a panel discussion on housing for the urban invisibles with Jalal Ahmad, Salauddin Ahmed, Saif Ul Haque, Nahas Khalil and Ehsan Khan.
Description of the Global Housing Studio:
In 2016, The Public Works Department (PWD) prepared a master plan to turn the capital’s Tejgaon Industrial Area, The Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC), Tejgaon CSD (Central Storage Depot) into an industrial-cum-commercial and residential area. The students facilitated by BIAL toured and researched the designated area on themes like, domestic spaces, thresholds/borders, social spaces, income generation and materials in groups. They regrouped and focused their propositions and sites based on housing typologies like government employee housing, student housing and low cost housing in the Tejgaon area. Their travelling studio was also facilitated by various lectures on housing and community architecture.
