Bengal Institute is dedicated to imagining a future Bangladesh through prospects of designed settlements and landscapes. Bengal Institute conducts research and design initiatives at regional and urban scales through multidisciplinary academic and research programs. Team of national and international experts in many disciplines are involved in the initiatives. Ideas and programs of the Institute are open to everyone and circulated through exhibitions, public events and publications. Established in 2015, Bengal Institute has already become a leading organisation in rethinking the future of our settlements and habitats.
Short Description
The Bengal Institute for Architecture, Landscapes and Settlements is a unique, transdisciplinary forum for the study and design of the environment, based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. As a place for advancing the understanding of the lived environment, the Bengal Institute presents a platform for developing ideas and programs to improve the qualities of architecture, landscapes and settlements. In generating a critical, creative and humanistic dialogue, the Institute proposes an integrated approach to the arrangement and rearrangement of the environment. Innovative transdisciplinary programs of the Institute will integrate architectural and design research, investigation of cities and settlements, and the study of larger regions and landscapes.
Bengal Institute
Architecture is just as much a science as it is an art; everyone has something new to learn in it. The notion that traditional architectural process and discourse has to be confined to problem solving in form and creation is a misguided one and an interdisciplinary effort is needed to abrogate it. Through the elevation of one’s thoughts, Bengal Institute for Architecture, Landscape and Settlements plans to have the architecture discipline fuse intellectual, ethical and critical issues in the knowledge dissemination process.
A major part of the furious urban and infrastructural expansion in Bangladesh is unplanned, and much of it is a threat to the future of our environment and wellbeing. The tremendous speed and pressure of urbanisation is affecting our villages, small towns and megacities alike. To cope with this change and to be prepared for rapid urbanisation and climate-change, we need a group of people who are educated and trained about urban futures, landscape arrangements and global environmental phenomena. In Bangladesh, much like many other places, the lack of understanding of these issues is proving to be a major obstacle in trying to tackle them. This has left Bangladesh with a need for a locally established, global institute to produce a new group of thinkers who can take on the responsibility of researching and designing to shape the environmental future of the country. Bengal Institute is working towards developing thinkers and practitioners with a new ‘design intelligence,’ who are trained by an international lineup of faculty. The Institute is also initiating design and research activities to study existing situations, and produce ideas about future planning of our cities, landscapes and settlements.
The Chairman of Bengal Foundation, Abul Khair, believes in the future prospects of Bangladesh, and that the design of landscapes and cities will bring about an effective change in realising those prospects. In alignment with the vision of Muzharul Islam, the pioneer modern architect of Bangladesh, Bengal Institute is a beginning effort towards the idea of designing and planning every inch of the country.
Academic Programs
The obsession with trying to fit the discipline into a strict specialised definition which has resulted in many academic programs leaving out many vital aspects of architecture has left aspiring architects failing to learn some of the defining skills needed to be a complete architect .In Bengal Institute, the pursuit to bridge the gap between these related fields will give these young architects the opportunity to see the field as a whole, improving their understanding of it and hopefully helping them become the architects they want to be.
Research Programs
Being established in Dhaka, the focal point of Bengal Institute’s programs and research is on Bangladesh. Bengal Institute’s research involves the work on the landscape, conditions and requirements of Bangladesh’s infrastructure and settlements. By consolidating all relevant information concerning the issues of the region, the research department aims to help solve these problems to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants. Harmonisation with nature has been one of the most commonly resolved solutions in the studies.
To initiate these momentous changes, Bengal Institute has set up an academic program that encourages critical and analytical thinking so the creative process of its participants are enhanced. Distinguished guests and faculties from all over the world are invited to not only offer their views and ideas in an environment that both promotes and catalyses free thought, but to also facilitate the development of skills that will help the participants realise their vision. It is a unique program which offers an outstanding opportunity to local architects, design professionals and interested peers from any discipline to learn more about shaping the future of our environment.
The academic program of Bengal Institute is now focused on two four month long sequences in Fall and Spring, running from August to November and February to May. Bengal Institute also organises various seminars and events where the guest speakers share their knowledge and expertise to the public. The speakers range from well established architects to public health professionals and philosophers. Speakers are invited from all over the world and the objective behind including such speakers is to allow local architects and the architecture community gain some perspective from various contexts and also allows for the guests to gain an outlook of Bangladesh. Which could help tackle problems on both global and local fronts. The Research and Design programs are working towards several different projects focusing on redesigning some parts of Dhaka city, certain small towns and Bangladesh as a whole.
ভবিষ্যতের বাংলাদেশ বিনির্মাণে কাজ করে যাচ্ছে বেঙ্গলইনস্টিটিউট ফর আর্কিটেকচার, ল্যান্ডস্কেপস অ্যান্ড সেটেলমেন্টস।২০১৫ সালে কাজ শুরু করা এ প্রতিষ্ঠান এরই মধ্যে বাংলাদেশের ভবিষ্যৎ জনবসতি এবং পরিবেশবিষয়ক চিন্তাভাবনার নেতৃত্ব দিচ্ছে। বিভিন্ন বিষয়ে অভিজ্ঞ জাতীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক বিশেষজ্ঞদের সমন্বয়ে গঠিত একটি দল এই উদ্যোগের সঙ্গেজড়িত।
বেঙ্গল ইনস্টিটিউট বাংলাদেশের স্থাপত্য নিয়ে কাজ করছে তিনভাবে—অধ্যয়ন, গবেষণা ও প্রকাশনা। ইনস্টিটিউটের অ্যাকাডেমিক প্রোগ্রামের প্রধান উদ্দেশ্য স্নাতকোত্তর পর্যায়ের একটি শিক্ষা কার্যক্রম চালু করা, যেখানে একই সঙ্গে স্থাপত্য, ল্যান্ডস্কেপ ও জনবসতিবিষয়ক শিক্ষা ও আলোচনার ক্ষেত্র তৈরি হবে। ২০১৫ সালের আগস্ট থেকে অ্যাকাডেমিক প্রোগ্রামে বছরে দুটি (শরৎ ও বসন্ত) চার মাসব্যাপী শিক্ষা কার্যক্রম চলছে। এ সময় ধারাবাহিক সেমিনার, আলোচনা, বক্তৃতা, কর্মশালা ও ডিজাইন স্টুডিও কার্যক্রম হয়। পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন প্রান্ত থেকে এসব বিষয়ের সেরা শিক্ষক, গবেষক ও পেশাদার ব্যক্তিদের আমন্ত্রণ জানানো হয় এখানে পাঠদান ও আলোচনার জন্য। বিখ্যাত নগর পরিকল্পনাবিদ গ্যারি হ্যাক, স্থাপত্য সমালোচক মাইকেল সরকিন, বিখ্যাত ভারতীয় স্থপতি বালকৃষ্ণ দোশি এবং স্থপতি ও লেখক জুহানি পালাসমার মতো শিক্ষক এসেছিলেন ইনস্টিটিউটে।ক্লাসরুমের বাইরেও উন্মুক্ত অনুষ্ঠানের মাধ্যমে সবার অংশগ্রহণের ব্যবস্থা করা হয়। এ দেশের স্থপতি ও যেকোনো আগ্রহী ব্যক্তির এ ধরনের আয়োজনে অংশগ্রহণের সুযোগ একটি সৌভাগ্যেরব্যাপার।
২০১৫ সালের শেষ দিকে ইনস্টিটিউটের গবেষণা ও ডিজাইন বিভাগ কাজ শুরু করে। এটি বসতি ও ভূপ্রাকৃতিক গবেষণা ও পরিকল্পনার মাধ্যমে ভবিষ্যৎ বাংলাদেশের রূপরেখা তৈরির কাজে নিয়োজিত। ঢাকার মতো বৃহৎ ও জটিল শহর থেকে শুরু করে মোংলা, মানিকগঞ্জের মতো ছোট শহরের সম্ভাবনা নিয়ে গবেষণা বিভাগ কাজ করে চলেছে। এ ছাড়া ইনস্টিটিউটে বিভিন্ন পরিধির গবেষণা চলমান, যা জাতীয় পর্যায়ের তথ্য ও মানচিত্র, ছোট শহর, বড় শহর, গণপরিবহন, ঘনবসতির বাসযোগ্যতা, মাটি-পানি-নদী ইত্যাদি নানা বিষয়ে কাজ চলছে।
২০১৬ সালের অক্টোবরে ‘আগামীর ঢাকা’ প্রদর্শনীর মাধ্যমেগবেষণা বিভাগ প্রথমবারের মতো ঢাকার কিছু এলাকার উন্নয়ন পরিকল্পনার কাজ সবার সামনে তুলে ধরে। এই প্রদর্শনী নভেম্বরে বেঙ্গল উচ্চাঙ্গসংগীত উৎসবেও প্রদর্শিত হয়, যা নাগরিক সমাজেব্যাপক সাড়া ফেলে। একইভাবে ২০১৭র ফেব্রুয়ারিতে ‘আগামীর সিলেট’ প্রদর্শনী দশ দিনব্যাপী সিলেটে বেঙ্গল সাংস্কৃতিক উৎসবে দেখানো হয়। এ দুটি প্রদর্শনী শহরবাসীকে নিজেদের শহর নিয়ে নতুন করে ভাবায়। ২০১৭ সালের ডিসেম্বরে বেঙ্গল উচ্চাঙ্গসংগীতউৎসবে ছিল গণপরিসর বিষয়ক কাজগুলোর একটি প্রদর্শনী।শুধু গবেষণা বা প্রদর্শনী নয়, ইনস্টিটিউটের কাজগুলো যেন বাস্তবে রূপ পায়, তারও কিছু উদ্যোগ এরই মধ্যে নেওয়া শুরু হয়েছে।
এসব কার্যক্রম ও উদ্যোগ সবার কাছে পৌঁছে দেওয়ার লক্ষ্যে কাজ করে যাচ্ছে ইনস্টিটিউটের প্রকাশনা বিভাগ। স্থাপত্যবিষয়ক নিয়মিত নিউজলেটার ভাস প্রকাশিত হচ্ছে বছরে দুইবার। সেই সঙ্গে প্রকাশিত হচ্ছে স্থাপত্যের নানা বইও। কাজী খালিদআশরাফ সম্পাদিত আন্তর্জাতিক সংকলন সিরিজ লোকেশনসবের হচ্ছে প্রতি বছর, যা বাংলাদেশ এবং যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের যৌথ উদ্যোগে‘ওআরও এডিশনস’ থেকে প্রকাশিত হয়।
