Our current mode and depiction of existence become almost incomprehensible due to the explosion of unimaginable visual culture that clearly asks (in a certain way) the question of how all these media representations inform our perception of ourselves and our understanding of the world around us. Like many of us, this enthralls architect Emran and he became interested in and keeps looking for architecture that primarily resides in the domain of cultural discourse (like: art, film, music etc.). Keen on “disciplinary specificity”, for him, every project starts with a new frame of mind as part of a consistent endeavor to generate “effects” and evoke discussions about the role of architecture (like: art) in human experience in guise of cultural discipline. Thus, many of his works investigated “existential and psychological” concerns in a physical form, that in itself evolved in the intersection of reified (abstract) object, it’s geometry, proportion, porousness, tectonics, structure, light, view, part-whole relationship, symbolic (dis)association/(re)association, metaphors etc. All these efforts are made to offer an understanding of the role of “individual” with “collective” and “collective” with the world.
Emran received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 2004 and his Master of Architecture Degree from Harvard University, Graduate School of Design in 2007. Emran worked at Steven Holl Architects, New York; from 2007 to 2009. At Steven Holl Architects, Emran primarily worked on ‘Sliced Porosity Block’ (Chengdu, China) and at different stages of ‘ Link Hybrid (Beijing, China) and Vanke (Shenzhen, China) project. He also taught at BUET and BRAC University as visiting faculty. He served as Consultant Architect for four years at Bangladesh Police kallayan Trust, and engaged in several large scale mixed-use buildings. Alongside his extensive work experience, Emran has also won a number of local and international awards since he was student. He is the principal architect of “Architect Emran & Associates (Ar-EA)”.
