The publication Good Practices in RMG Factory Design Guidance is produced as a collaboration between the Bengal Institute for Architecture, Landscapes and Settlements (BIALS) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) as a first-time effort to approach the efficacy of a factory space and the health and safety of the workers through a design narrative. The book is also a memorial to the 2013 Rana Plaza tragedy and an homage to the lives lost.
As a guidance manual for ready-made garment factories in Bangladesh, the book presents examples of planning schemas for medium and large-scale factories. A team of professional architects, engineers, environmental and policy experts have contributed to analyzing current challenges in RMG sector, and approaching them with design and planning options. The document prioritizes workers’ welfare and owners’ expectations by articulating the optimum utilization of factory space as well as a healthy work environment for workers. A clearer picture of national and international legislative regulations, recommendations and guidelines for a safe work environment in the ready-made garment sector has been assembled for an easier access and understanding.

The initiative of ILO to “showcase good practice and innovative design ideas,” especially through a design guidance document, is timely and crucial for establishing that “knowledge source” in the form of a design guidance document. The design guidance aims to communicate with garment owners, engineers, workers, professionals and lay people with explanatory pictorial messages representing provisions and compliances in the RMG sector.

Design is after all an enterprise for making our lives better. The book is thus an endeavor to interconnect factory requirements and workers’ welfare through the realm of design. Bengal Institute is happy to be involved as an implementation partner with the initiative in producing this important document.
