Balkrishna Doshi Passes Away (1927-2023)

Bengal Institute mourns the loss of one of the most influential architects of our time, Balkrishna Doshi, who passed away in Ahmedabad today. He was 95 years old.
A practitioner of architecture for over 70 years, with a profound impact on the architecture of India and the subcontinent, Prof. Doshi had studied and worked with both Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn. He developed a uniquely Indian modernism in architecture, and was best known for his innovative work of designing low-cost housing, as well as powerful forms resonating with a deep spirituality.
With his passing, Bengal Institute has lost a deeply regarded mentor, friend and adviser. A member of the Advisory Board of the Institute, Prof Doshi came to Dhaka for a memorable symposium in November 2016, where he spoke about his journey of revising, pursuing, understanding and analyzing architecture. Today, the history of architecture takes a new turn.
